To me there's just a general sense of hopelessness in those opening verses and then that changes by the time they get to the bridge. Maybe it's the fact that I recently saw Hadystown, so I've got Orpheus and Eurydice on the brain, but there's something romantic about that. The idea that in the midst of all these geopolitical machinations, you can imagine how this fell in the middle of the 1980s at the height of the Cold War, we still might find some connection. Even if we don't make it out, we'll almost make it and we'll be holding hands as we do, all for freedom and for pleasure. Nothing ever lasts
