The claim that trees are communicating and talking to each other is sort of the boldest claim. The fungi have much more agency and power in this relationship than they've typically been giving credit for. We really do want to be careful about anthropomorphizing trees because trees are very, very different from us in a lot of really important ways.
Studies suggesting trees communicate through an elaborate underground fungal network have captured imaginations. It’s a beautiful idea, but the fantasy may have gotten ahead of the science.
