The Subversive Art of Hegemony

The hegemonic processes are disrupted merely by being questioned. One of the things that gives hegemony its power is that it's not questioned. And once it starts being questioned, its foundations are very rocky. So we see, for example, with the Bronte's. The idea was that, first of all, women couldn't write. They don't have the ability to do it. But they touched on a sore point right at the point when the society itself was grappling with that sort of issue. It keeps women in their place.
