In a world in which you can get obligation, free status and goodwill, the incentive is always going to be there for people to overplay their hand about how moral they are. There's still a massive incentive to virtue signal. And one thing that religious institutions did is that they allowed us to see other people who show the same religion as members of the same extended family or brothers and sisters. So this kind of cultural adaptation interacted with our moral minds to expand our moral circles to encompass the whole religious tribe - not just our local bands.
