Architecture and the Digital Economy - What's the Future of Higher Education?

The modern architect emerged in the 19th century as the arbiter of a contract between a client and contractor. Why are we still worrying about a degree in art history, a degree in architecture, at level six? Rather than almost abstracting thematically the kinds of skills and ways of thinking that you need to function in quite a fast-changing economy and wider environment? I don't have the answer to that question, but it's a really relevant one as we figure out what are the appropriate funding mechanisms for higher education.
