TV advertising pioneers like Tony Schwartz wrote a very interesting expose of his own industry called the Responsive Chord. He noted many of the techniques that can be employed to bypass the conscious attention of the viewer and make them believe something without even knowing why it is they believe. Electronic media are particularly effective tools in this regard, because they provide us with direct access to people's minds.
