China's Economic Coercion in Australia
China has periodically hinted at the economic lever against things that it doesn't like that Australia does in the political and security space. In 2021 after Australia made the call for an inquiry into the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, China signaled there would be consequences. The key takeaway from the Australian experience is, hold your nerve, diversify your market and wait for the market to adjust. Overall, there was no macroeconomic damage. There was very significant sectoral damage to those agricultural exports that were targeted by China.
