Joseph Smith didn't want to be publicly anti-slavery because of how much he had brought on them. Missouri was one of those battleground states where you had people that were both pro- and anti-Slavery. No one could testify that Joseph Smith had been at any of the battles, nor could they prove that he ordered the attacks. The point of the army, Samson Avard said, was for Joseph Smith to establish a personal kingdom in America.
