The Importance of Jerusalem in the Middle East
The Islamic leadership understood the significance of Jerusalem they had held it for nearly 450 years. The Fatimids were viewed both ethnically different because they were largely burbers from North Africa intermarried with Arabs but of course heretics so at a certain stage you know all the big major cities that we think of in the Middle East were all really at odds and would support each other. This division in the Islamic world just created the circumstances under which a very bold thrust by this very disparate coalition of Western knights got as far as Jerusalem.
