Would the US be prepared to escalate a war so that it would include large-scale air campaign focused on the Chinese mainland? Because if it does that, then it is in essence expanding the war and inviting China to also strike targets on the mainland United States. And when that happens, I think a nuclear exchange becomes much more realistic than it would if you implicitly agreed to keep the war localised rather than expanded to both countries. Would you want to hit the Chinese mainland given the risks involved of nuclear escalation? And then the second point, how would you do it? Most military analysts would say that China has the most comprehensive and sophisticated air defence system of any major power of its own continent.
