The Challenges of Expertise in Politics
I think one of the flaws in that kind of old progressive view of expertise is that we can use technical expertise to solve political social problems. And so because of that we're asking experts implicitly or not to make judgments about things that go well beyond the kind of narrow area of specialized expertise they might normally have. So I think kind of a kind of humbler view of what expertise is and how it lives in complex modern society is a first step for thinking about how we can situate it into a place which's not as conclicual.
