The brain has a fight will we believe has a finite storage capacity. We can't prove it yet, but my suspicion is that that's probably true. For example, it's not beneficial from an evolutionary perspective for me to remember where I parked my car three years ago. And in that sense, there is an enormous benefit to letting go.
