Is There a One Size Fits All Answer?
There's no one answer to overgeneralize. I think there are some cases in which it was in the best financial interests of the company to signal something that their executives absolutely did not believe. In other cases, it is actually not in the financial best interests of a company but they're forced to adopt that behavior by large asset managers like BlackRock and Vanguard. All of them represent a threat to democracy because it involves an empowered market actor making a political or social judgment without the backstop of political accountability on which our system is built.
