What's the Biggest Thing About Navajo?
William: Navajo has these little stems, single syllable at the end of the word and literally hundreds of other prefixes can happen doing this changing transitivity. So enormous amounts of meaning are drawn out of sometimes quite simple stems. For me, the most interesting thing about Navajo is just to get an idea for how differently you can go about taking very simple roots and producing new meaning. That's the big thing. Just think about completely different ways of constructing a lexicon. There are deeper things that the language has to teach language invention, language inventors rather, but that would require a much longer rambling talk from William that would last too long.
