The Importance of Bail Reform
Bail reform is one of the most successful policies that I've seen in my 30 years of doing this, but politicians don't take it seriously. If you're too poor to post bail, then you can't assist in your own defense or meet with your attorney. Bail reform makes us safer and saves us huge amounts of money. Remember the $565,000 you keep somebody in Rikers Island who hasn't been convicted of a crime? That's better for clickbait right there. Nobody wants to report the good news; no one wants to talk about things that we're talking about now.
