Mara is the incarnation or the indian god of greed and hate and fear. He comes to test the buddha under the bodi tree as he's trying to get enlightened, at least in this great archetypeal story. The interesting thing is that mara reappears forty more times in in the text and the stories of the buddharas wandering around. So it's not like mara just now you've defeated mara, and mara slinks away, and it's you're done. Mara comes back.
