Montezuma's rage does seem to have eventually abated. He must have sat and pored over the images that his painters had brought back to him. The stories they brought back seemed almost unbelievable. And he was amazed at their food. It especially made him faint when he heard how the guns went off at the spaniard's command, sounding like thunder - causing people actually to swoon.
