Emily Thompson is a professor of history at Princeton University. Her studies focus on sound technologies in American culture. She says ancient civilizations believed everything was tied together by harmonic ratios. In the 16th century, churches started being built with balconies inside of them. That sounds like a small detail, but even the smallest changes can alter acoustics dramatically.
