The first fragrances that we understand to have used synthetics emerged in the 18 eighties. Lizzie: Having access to synthetic cumarin, and putting it together with other materials like lavender let you sort of go off on new directions. So fuge royal, for example, royal fern let perfumers have a sort of flight of fancy as the idea of what a fern would smell like. The twentieth century is really where fragrance as we know it came to be.
