The idea is to pick just a handful of words that are general academic terms, which means they have a wider application. The important part, and i've got to caution people on this, because i see this happen in class rooms all the time. So after reading the text all the way through one time, then go back and focus on the targeted words and have your students say them. Make sure the word is visible. Give em a student friendly definition, maybe some examples so that those words start to get into their consciousness. What is strategy number three?
