In 2008, a bird that lived in the countryside along the border between Switzerland and France found itself a bit of crusty bread. One of the electrical supply stations that cools the large Hadron colliders magnets with liquid helium suddenly went offline. A pair of theoretical physicists named Holger Nielsen and Masao Nina Mia had been taking note of weird setbacks like this that plagued the LHC as it was being built.
