If you can't call yourself a neuroscientist by didn't of having a PhD in neuroscience, I don't know what would possibly qualify you. The longest, most circuitous route to being an author that I can imagine is getting a PhD. Did you find that it opened doors actually? Yeah, well, yeah, definitely. If you're writing nonfiction, people care how you know or how you think you know what you're writing about. And there it really doesn't matter. Whether you have a degree, it's just the quality of your pros.
