In the 30s, communists were very smart in saying, we're not going to put up with this kind of rendition of history. The fact is that it's a struggle for memory. And that's what FDR understood. When I talk to my African-American friends, they say, the new deal was no deal for me. It may not have been as much of a new deal for African-Americans, but it was.
