Tolkien's Favorite Characters
As a Christian, for instance, Tolkien knows what virtuous and good character seen most especially in the Saints, looks like. We find ourselves drawn to so many of the great and noble characters because, as Tolkien well knows, we are at bottom, wired for,. drawn to goodness, beauty, truth, heroism, and love. This explains why we are decidedly not drawn to evil and wickedness, to ugliness, to pride, to betrayal, to falsehood, or to hate.
