The Importance of Gothic Cathedrals
Gothic cathedrals are long, pointy, horizontal as well as vertical. They're broad and it's tall, maximum height and light - these are the twin aims of Gothic. And if you think of Gothic too, you think of the great expanses of stained glass, which we just couldn't have before. The relics were the drivers for pilgrims coming to cathedrals and offering money on pilgrim silver. It was £40,000 to make over that entire cathedral. Considering Henry II's budget was about £25,000 to £35,000 for the entire country for a year. That just shows just how important they were.
