This is a really hard thing to test in non-human animals, which is why I've moved to humans to explore this question. In the video games that we currently play, they balance wins and losses for you. If you win something, they might match you with someone more difficult, where you end up losing. But then they match you withSomeone who's a little bit worse than you, and you end up winning. So it doesn't seem like it's that simple. And I do agree with you, because I do think, personally, that it is something about self perception.
