Targets can be quite demotivating because if you realize you are not going to hit your target you kind of give up. We need to understand that our targets are meant to motivate us. The 10,000 steps is an invention of some marketing company in Japan back in the 60s. It can be very motivating but if you are not working because you don't have your watch then maybe you have became slightly too obsessive about this target.
