The Importance of History

I wanted to focus on the high level of strategy and also what military planners often call the operational level of war or the campaign level of war. I learned partly from a very nice US Marine Corps booklet about campaigning that was written back in the 1990s. So I'm hopeful I didn't make too many big mistakes by taking this approach, but that's what I tried to do. Now it's not guaranteed to work in every instance. And I certainly wrote the book in some trepidation of how historians who really knew the individual war is much better than I might react. But so far I've been gratified that historians seem to view me to some extent as a partner in crime,
