The debt limit is not going to trigger some sincere debate over the solvency of these programs. Part of this is the politics of using the word cut or slash. The Republicans are going to come into that saying we want to reduce the trajectory of spending. They don't take kindly when you say, oh, so you're going to slash Social Security.
