Douglass articulated the vision of what America should and can be at the highest level probably better than any American ever because it was a vision that we could fashion something common out of it. The dialectic of being exposed to these diverse traditions in an era of freedom would lead to this incredible composite culture so my view is that that should be our north star now. We have not had fairness for groups that have had oppression to feel that there needs to be some form of collective solidarity and organizing to achieve equality I think is understandable but that should be seen as a transitional necessity in the path to ultimately Douglass's vision as opposed to the end state.
