The two party system was really based around a lot of consensus, which meant that a lot of differences in the country weren't being aired and debated. So ultimately, it was a failure of imaginationa to understand what it would look like to have two truly distinct parties representing two very different geographies,. very different values and fundamentally different ideas of what it means to be an American.
