The dark mood is because Lewis was copying Charles Williams style. Arthurian legend plays a key part of the book, but there's reasons for these things. The supernatural and mundane are kind of haphazardly thrown together in this book. But beyond that, as we'll see, there's a purpose for that. He's making a criticism of modernity.
