Elvis's contract was for sale, but only for $35,000. In 1955 that would be the highest sum of money ever paid for a recording artist's contract. Sam Phillips didn't have any artists who could take Elvis's place. He decided to tell Tom Parker: "I'll make him an offer that I know they will refuse"
