There are other types of blocks that can be done. A bilateral parisurgical block is appropriate to cover visceral pain from the first stage of labor only. That essentially involves injection of local headache at lateral effects of the cervix. It doesn't involve any growth motor or sensory block for the mom. However, just keep in mind that it doesn't cover somatic pain for the second stage.
