If it's like a complex book I'd rather read a summary first so that I kind of understand okay there this is where this thing is and then I can dig into it in more detail. Greg Hochl's book the story of reality explains the whole story from start to finish for those who are unsure about the overall story. You might consider even investing in logus bible software because I find that to be really helpful for my daily bible reading.
