Shackleton's expedition was also known as the british antarctic expedition, and it was called the nimrod expedition for the ship they were on. The reason shackleton had announced the expedition when he did and set the time line was out of fear that some other expedition was going to get to the pole first if they didn't. But scott really saw this as a betrayal and an attempt to horn in on his expedition. After dropping off the shore party, the nnimrod returned to new zealand. On september 20, fifth, 19 o eight, Shackleton left for the south pole with four surviving ponies because their car wasn't working very well
