Ptolemy's alma jest remained the most important astronomical text for centuries after its publication. The Greeks were becoming subsumed into the Roman Empire, which itself fell in the 5th century AD. At least in scientific terms, Europe was entering a dark age. However, astronomy as the science would live on thanks to the rise of the next great scientific culture, the Arabs.
