What Happened to the Republican Party?

I've been covering Republican politics for over 20 years and was raised in a very conservative community. My father was a lifelong Republican but he believed the personal responsibility meant you don't foster all these grievances and blame everyone else for your plight. He probably would not have stayed married to my mother, a Democrat for 64 years if she had voted Democratic. Something has happened to the party over time and while we could talk at some length about the succession of steps that led to where the party is now, my book is not a history book. It's when it lost its mind. I say Trump era advisedly because Trump, at least in theory, does not command center stage anymore.
