The e. S v study bible was designed for people who don't have access to all the sort of riches that we do. There are introductions to each book, but then there are also introductions to the various types of books. A good introduction to each book is one of the most valuable things in a Bible - it can get you a great running start on a book. I believe in sola scriptura, the scripture alone our ultimate authority. But it would take decades, i think, to reconstruct on your own with no help allo the history and dates.
