The first biography of Churchill came out in 1905 when he was 30. Harrow, pretty kind of shabby student, rather than go to university, joined the cavalry because he's very into empire as a sort of adventure playground. He goes off as a journalist to see that war in Cuba visits America for the first time and then serves in India and Sudan under Lord Kitchener. Then wants to get into politics, basically considers himself a liberal but his dad's main political obsession was opposing home rule in Ireland. And so I feel almost all out of filial loyalty, like that's a red line for him. So he stands for the Tories in the old and by election in 1819 loses
