Orientalism and the Grand Tour

Because Europe had established colonies in the East, Orientalism wasn't confined to the page. It was popular for aristocratic youth to take a year or two off from school and study these ancient cultures. The Grand Tour typically began in Greece and Rome. Although Western European society drew much inspiration from the ancient classical world, modern Greece was still categorized as part of the East.
