The initial explosion of a nuclear bomb doesn't last very long. So what you're thinking about is sort of like a pulse. Like all this radiation in a sphere that's traveling out very, very fast and then getting dimmer and dimmer as it goes. And so it's really just like a pulse that travels through space, washing over things and damaging them. The electrons can be particularly damaging because they tend to radiate.
