In 1991, when Apple was going through a major transition to desktop publishing, you had to have diverse knowledge of bringing it together. "I was seduced by that freedom that afforded me to have all these other lives," he says. He decided to go part time with university as a consultant and started his own business in the early '90s. The company is now worth more than $1 billion.
