The modern political party, as it emerged through the 19th and 20th century, is a mass institution that has a real organic grounding in civil society. What we have today is an exaggerated version of what Robert Putnam referred to as bowling alone. That is the atomization of society. Social media allows an individual like Donald Trump to run for president without any connection to an organic party. It allows Bernie Sanders to almost prevail in the Democratic party primary in 2016 over Hillary Clinton.
