The First Composition of Ethel Smythe
The slow movement of the quartet is probably my favorite. It's all the more extraordinary for being a piece that Ethel Smythe composed when she was just 26 and still finding her feet as a composer. The piece has a wonderful energy to it, a sense of life and buoyancy that only seems effortless to pull off. Let's move on now to a slightly more recognizable composer, Georgi Nesco,. Just listen to this clip of him playing his own third sonata - you'll know exactly what I mean.
