The Importance of Flag State Jurisdiction in the International Seabed Convention
The United States has not agreed to participate in the law of the sea convention we haven't ratified it because the Reagan administration and many republicans since Reagan really opposed that part of the agreement on seabed mining. There's this phenomenon called flags of convenience where essentially ships choose to register in countries that have weak laws and low capacity and low will to enforce the laws. Next we continue our look at ocean policy with Besminton Hall and find out why maybe this should be called the high seas treaty after all.
