The quadrivium is a trickier matter because math and science have moved on since the ancient world. You don't ned to lern ancient music theory unless you're going tobe a specialist. The point is that even all our sophisticated mathematical and scientific research takes place with a poor understanding of what it is. It takes place in the contexts of an end in itself.
