The author of Overcoming Bias says that not every rationalist is just somebody who just wanted to rebel and then found this one amongst the others. It's always a hard question. The inevitable forces of history versus the great man theory of histories, right? There like World War II, there were so many things pushing to make it happen that it was basically inevitable that something like it would happen. But on the other hand, we got Hitler and Churchill and Roosevelt as the major players made a huge fucking difference in what actually happened.
