Introduction
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the Muslim League, is due to address a rally in Kolkata today. He fears that both the British colonial government and the Hindu-led Indian Congress want to sideline the country's Muslim minority. Controversially, Jinnah has called for a separate Muslim nation. The turmoil lasts four days and becomes known as the Great Calcutta Killing. Some 15 million people left their homes in an attempt to flee the bloodshed on the subcontinent. Up to one million were killed during the violence which led to the partition of India into two parts - Muslims and Hindus.
