I think a couple things. We tend as intellectuals to overstate the importance of ideology in political history, generally, right? If you want to take the parallels with the McCarthy era, how was it that Joe McCarthy got to be Joe McCarthy? The quickest way to make a coalition is unified and hatred against other people. There are a bunch of people who will always vote for a Republican and a lot of people who always vote for Democrats. No matter what, these are always Democrats and always Republicans. Those persuadable voters put personality. They have low confidence in politicians to tell the truth. And Donald Trump stole from them because they were not able to publicly say out of their own craven
